Maribor is the second largest city in Slovenia (over 100 000 inhabitants) with a rich history, a university (25 000 students), an exquisite theatre company (drama, opera, ballet) and other significant institutions. It displays all the characteristics of a Central European city. Geographically, it is defined by the river Drava, numerous surrounding vineyards and the Pohorje mountain complex. In the vicinity, there are several points of interest, such as spas, historic sites and recreational centres. In 2012, Maribor will be the "European Cultural Capital", and will then proceed to host the winter Universiade in 2013, which will place it in the centre of attention of the international public.
